Neanderthals

September 13th, 2006 by Jake

A find that BBC and NYT reported opens new ideas about cohabitation.  Neanderthals are considered by many scientists a separate branch in evolution that ended, whereas our branch continues.  These new findings imply a long-term co-existence with humans.

Since I am a young-earth proponent and do not believe in macro-evolution, I don’t adhere to the ideas presented.  However, I do find the concept interesting and have often wondered how to intelligent species would function together.  Maybe I watched to much sci-fi growing up.

Space Bombs

September 12th, 2006 by Jake

According to Wired the US military is looking into the next generation to have “a quick-launch space plane that could drop a bomb anywhere on the globe within two hours, without the need of forward bases.  I realize I’m not the most open minded person when it comes to warfare technologies, but this doesn’t seem like a step in the right direction.

The Perseptive Youth

Sixth Grade

Episode 1

Student 1:  Looking at a picture of a Somali girl dying in the street, “Why didn’t they help her - the photographer - why didn’t he help her?

Me: “That’s a good question…

I’m glad she noticed.  I’m glad she noticed that telling the story is not the same as changing the story.  I’m glad she noticed that telling the world is not the same as the world.

Episode 2

Student 2: Mentions something about wanting to punch something.

Me: “Violence doesn’t solve anything.

Student 3:  “War is violence.  Violence solves things.

Me: “War doesn’t solve anything.

Student 3: “Yes it does.

We have taught our children to support war.  We have taught our children that violence is the answer - that violence solves things.

Light of the World

How Many Lightbulbs Does it Take to Change the World?

“In terms of oil not burned, or greenhouse gases not exhausted into the atmosphere, one bulb is equivalent to taking 1.3 million cars off the roads.”
“a $3 swirl pays for itself in lower electric bills in about five months.”
“the modern ice-cream swirl bulb requires no sacrifice. Buying and using it helps save the world–and also saves the customer money–with no compromise on quality. Selflessness and self-satisfaction, twirled into a single $3 purchase.”

You have no excuse.

My File’s file?

Teaching CertificateSo my Missouri teacher’s certificate seems to have a typographical error.  Either that or my file has a file that I don’t know about.  I suppose even the most official events can have hiccups.  I wonder how many of these have been printed.
